Project Description

Nestled in Derry City’s heart, our flagship café sits beside the historic Diamond.

We’ve been serving customers, both local and visiting, in the Diamond since 1991, a location ideally located for the city’s workforce, the weekend walkers and bikers, as well as the flood of tourists the city welcomes all year-round.

Where the Wild Atlantic Way and the Causeway Coast meet, Derry is the second largest city in Northern Ireland and the fourth-largest city on the island of Ireland.

Within walking distance of the café, you can find a wealth of attractions: niche shops; indoor markets; shopping centres; award-winning hotels; multiple access points onto the 17th century walls; the 1927 Diamond war memorial; Derry’s oldest surviving building, the 1633 gothic cathedral of St. Columb; and so much more, making it a perfect stop off point for tourists looking to both relax and eat!

Whether you are in need of a healthy breakfast, an Ulster fry, vegan-friendly option, or one of our lunch offerings, followed by something sweet to satisfy that craving, we have a vast range of options to sit down to or take away. Our in-house bakery prepares these delicious cakes and sweets daily, so they are always succulent and fresh.

Open seven days a week, the café regularly plays host to all sorts of live acts by talented local artists. From traditional Irish music to young up and coming singer-songwriters to Irish dancing demonstrations, lunchtimes and evenings in the Sandwich Co are never without buzz and great craic, with a promise of live music every Saturday and Sunday.

No matter how busy we get, our 100-seat capacity means there’s room for everyone, including outside seating at the front and at the rear, in the beautiful Garden of Reflection. The café at the Diamond is also the location of The Bunker Room, a large private space available for events and functions.

The Sandwich Co Standard

Our staff are trained to make excellent coffees, including lattes, cappuccinos, and Americanos. There’s a reason that when you see a paper coffee cup, it more often than not says Sandwich Co! Every step of the delicate coffee production process is as important as the last. From ripe coffee cherries picked at their peak to gurgling away in our cafés and tempting all with its aroma. We grade our coffee by our own standards, as well as international standards, so we can track our beans from plant to pot, ensuring that we are involved in good businesses and that your money goes to fairly compensating people every step of the way.

  • High-Quality Beans – Our coffee must pass muster with more than just international standards: it has to pass our own! From coffee cherry to steaming in your mug, every step is important to us.
  • Ethical Practices – We believe in fair trade at every step of production, which is why so much on offer at Sandwich Co bears the Fairtrade mark.
  • Healthy Food – We always offer a wide range of healthy options, including salads and vegan-friendly food and snacks.
  • Catering Hub– We serve all of the Northwest, providing catering services for all kinds of events and functions, from private parties to corporate seminars, to christenings, and everything in between.
  • Child-friendly We always welcome children, and can cater for their smaller appetites.
  • Vegan-Friendly All diets catered for.
  • AccessibilityThis location is fully accessible and contains disabled-friendly facilities.
  • Wi-Fi Available

Step into a secluded space attached to the Café at the Diamond that is instantly unique to anything else. The eclectic range of decorations, upcycled furnishings, and knick-knacks are complemented by the artwork of local artist Domnall Starkie.

As well as framed pictures, the walls are covered in beautiful artwork depicting the Peace Bridge, displaying famous quotes, and even a recreation of Starkie’s Culture Wall, a collage of book pages. Perhaps most striking is the huge mural covering the back wall, picturing many of Derry’s historical icons, such as the cannons, Bishop’s Gate, and the Hands Across the Divide monument.

The Bunker Room is capable of holding up to 50 people. Free to use during work hours and available for private renting in the evenings, it can be utilised for practically anything: meetings; private parties; book launches and readings; events, sessions, and workshops; and much more.
